Focus on Fashion: Heroes in Tights

Meet Sarah the tight wearing fiend from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The lovely 24 year old with crazy street style is one of the many ladies we interviewed for our focus on fashion for the zine! It is no surprised she is chosen to be displayed first. Her style is so captivating because of of its girlish charm. Thankfully, you have the opportunity to read our interview with her, to get a glimpse of her ingenuity and perhaps for her to be a muse for you as much as she as been for us here at Eleanor.

What do you for a living? At the moment I am working with a Art/Architectural Conservation Company, specifically doing Historic Preservation and Painting Conservation.

Do you own a website: Nope. Other than good ‘ole MySpace: www.myspace.com/sarahofasort. Although, my friend and I are attempting to start a styling business, which we will build a website for soon, hopefully.

What is your favorite hobby?: Thrifting/Flea Marketing, Drawing, Reading, Baking, Eating (preferably something good), Riding My Schwinn, !!Travelling!!, and The Usual.

How would you describe your style?: An 80s revival of 50s pin-up with quirk and a dash of overseas influence. I have lived in both Italy and France, so I garnered quite a bit of inspiration from European looks.

Style influences (don’t be afraid to say who you really like): Mostly Street Style websites such as: Face Hunter, Hel Looks, wardrobe_remix, and Copenhagen Street Style. Also, any publication geared at international style such as “Fruits” and “Nylon Street.” I prefer to see real people wearing attainable style, but I do love “high” fashion – I read Vogue every month.

What is your favorite item you own?: My pink 1950s HandyHot Blendette. Or, perhaps you meant clothing? That’s a bit tougher to nail down. This fall I think it’ll be the 80s puff-sleeve, nipped-waist leather jacket I got at the Goodwill Bin Store for fifty cents.

What shops in your area are a must see?: Nearly every thrift store here is great, but half-off Wednesday’s at the Salvation Army take the cake. As well as, the Goodwill Bin Store where everything is fifty cents, no exceptions. And Shining Light Thrift has a “Saturday’s Club” that equals huge discounts as well if you join and shop on that day (plus, the old ladies that work there are amazing!). Lastly, Gabriel Brothers is similar to TJ Maxx, but so much cheaper – great for accessories and tights.

Has your style changed since high school/junior high?: Um, yes. I’d rather not revisit those days. Although, I did thrift my first vintage item I grade eleven – a fifties dress coat with a fox fur collar.

When did you really find your own style?: In college. Experimentation is key. Make mistakes and look ridiculous. You’ll figure it out in the end.

What style item could you NOT live without?: In general, the vintage dress. Whether it is 50s or 80s in origin, it makes everything easier. Oh, and colored/textured leg-wear, too.

How do you afford your look?: It’s cheap!

Where do you mostly shop for your look?: Discount, discount, discount. Thrift, thrift, thrift.

What are you favorite designers?: Marc Jacobs, John Galliano, Prada, Marimekko (makes the most amazing patterns), Orla Kiley, Miu Miu, and assorted Street/Skate Wear designers.

Want to be featured in our street style section?? Think you are awesome and want to be interviewed for our artist section? THEN WE NEED YOU.

Here at Eleanor, we have very limited help, and we need to start a team. We need you to have some writing experience, preferably be over the age of 16, have some free time, willing to "volunteer" at Eleanor (for now..hopefully), share our beliefs, and be responsible to meet deadlines. If you are not in the Chicago land area, that is fine, we can work with you over the internet. But if you are passionate about fashion, music, movies, faith, politics, even food. LET US KNOW AND CONTRIBUTE TO ELEANOR!! We are looking for one time contributors, to full time personnel to be on the Eleanor team! What is Eleanor all about?

Why Eleanor? Why even the name Eleanor?

Well one day I was sitting on the train going to Chicago, and I realized how much a liked the name. You know when something hits you like a ton of bricks? It was just like that. The name Eleanor alone, just sounds so classy and beautiful. Like Eleanor Roosevelt or Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Eleanor Butterbean- From the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy
Eleanor Marx- The daughter of Karl Marx
Eleanor Dashwood- the heroine of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility
Eleanor Rigby- From the Beatles's Song

Or most importantly Eleanor- From Franz Ferdinand's "Eleanor put your boots on" One of my favorite songs. About a girl who could strap on her boots and run to the highest points in her life with no limitations. Here at Eleanor, we feel the same way!

But, this is just the the name, curious about what is magazine/blog is all about?

Well it's about faith, fashion, politics, and all things in-between. Eleanor promises to be a magazine that all women should be proud to read, no matter what faith (Christian, Jewish, Muslim) We promise not to be lewd or loud or rant on about Britney Spears. There is enough smut in the world, why add to it? We also promise to feature fashion spreads with models from all shapes and ALL COLORS, because at Eleanor, we come from different places, but its not fair that most fashion magazines assume were all Caucasian women that are a size 00. Also at Eleanor we promise to rock. We an indie magazine of course, so we promise to keep things DIY, grassroots, and Indie, because a lot of us here at Eleanor are just a bunch of crazy college hipster from the city. If you feel like any of these things are important to you, and so much more, than Eleanor is the place for you. So strap on your boots and enjoy the ride, with Eleanor, nothing is impossible!

Hello, everyone. Thanks for all your support for my clothing line and Eleanor. Magazine! Sadly I got ridiculously sick (in the hospital) at the beginning of the school year, and this school year has been really hectic with transferring and everything. But I wanted you to know that Eleanor is still in full force!!!

Here at Eleanor, we decided to wait until September 2008 to launch the zine and the fashion line with a opening party and fashion show. This blog will be used as a mini zine with Fashion tips, DIYs, my opinions and rants, and even some street style, to keep you fed until the full magazine and clothing line is launched. We have not forgotten about you at Eleanor. but it just turns out to be harder to run a business than we thought! ^_^ haha!
